We enjoyed meeting employers at the recent GradIreland Fair. We spent some time discussing exactly what graduate skills and competencies they are looking for this year.
Newsflash: almost all of them, regardless of the industry, want the same 6-7 competencies.
Once we had stocked up on the usual impressive collection of pens, highlighters and assorted post-it notes we delivered a seminar to a full house of students on how to Ace your Interview.
The Three P’s of Interview Success – Predict, Prepare and Practise were discussed and the humble highlighter pen was revealed as your secret weapon in maximising chances of success in your interview. With just about every employer in the RDS handing them out for free that day there was no excuse not secure a few for your future interview preparation.
Most graduate interviews follow the competency based question format and we outlined the sure-fire method to ensure you hit the target when answering these questions.
The STARR method – Situation, Task, Action, Result/Reflection
The STARR has been around for a while and for a good reason – it WORKS! To help you to structure your interview answers you can download our STARR template worksheet here. Hilt Competency Worksheet
Since over 40% of graduate recruiters now use Video Interviews as part of the assessment process we also treated our seminar audience a demo of a “real live” video interview and gave tips on how to excel in what can be a very daunting experience.
Judging from the reactions of the audience as we explained how a video interview works we are pretty convinced that most of you would prefer a half an hour in the dentist’s chair than complete a video interview but they are here to stay so it’s wise to learn how to prepare for them. Here is another blog we did on what to expect in a Video Interview and how to prepare.
