Human in the Loop: Why AI Should Support Recruitment, Not Control It
Human in the Loop – or HITL if you want to be really cool (!) is the latest trending phrase in AI and recruitment
I was speaking to a client recently about how they use AI in recruitment. They told me that their ATS reviews applications and produces a shortlist of candidates for interview. Pretty standard practice for large scale recruitment.
I asked them about the candidates that weren’t shortlisted and if they looked through any of those?
Their answer was that while in an ideal world they would, and that they often plan to, work gets in the way and they usually don’t. They go with the shortlist created by the AI and reject the others.
When AI makes the biggest recruitment decision
AI reviews 1,000 CVs, ranks candidates, shortlists the best 10, and the human accepts that recommendation.
The most important decision has already been made and it wasn’t by a human unless you call hitting Accept AI Recommendation a meaningful decision…which it isn’t.

Human in the loop should mean more than approval
We need to stop treating “human in the loop” as a box-ticking exercise.
A meaningful human in the loop isn’t someone who clicks Approve.
It’s someone who questions, challenges, and, where necessary, overrides the AI’s recommendation.
Keep the human in control and not just there to rubber stamp AI’s hiring decisions.
Final thoughts
As AI becomes increasingly common in recruitment, organisations should ensure that human oversight is genuine, active and meaningful. Technology should support better hiring decisions, not replace professional judgement.
Hilt works with organisations to build structured, fair and compliant recruitment processes that combine the benefits of AI with meaningful human decision-making.
