Why candidates reject job offers and how to stop it happening
In a recent interviewer workshop a participant was complaining that the number of rejections their company was getting to offered roles was increasing.
“We go through the whole process and then the candidate rejects our offer”
I asked how long it takes the to offer someone a job. The answer:
“Oh it depends on lots of things, it can take weeks…..
How can you increase the likelihood of the candidate saying yes?
How can you increase the likelihood of the candidate saying YES and set your company apart from competitors in one go?
It’s not rocket science.
Set a realistic timeline and get back to candidates when you say you will.
That’s it.
You don’t need a massive budget for snazzy websites or all-singing, all-dancing company videos.
Just do what you promised.
What candidates deserve from the process
If a candidate has taken the time to apply, prepare and interview with you, the minimum they deserve is a clear ‘Yes’, ‘No’, or ‘Not Yet’ within the timeframe you gave them.
Yes I know there may be layers of decision makers in your company and you are probably chasing feedback from someone who has met the candidate. Or you are still interviewing for that role and have scheduled another interview next week.
But think of the candidate who was told they would hear “by the end of next week” and that timeline has come and gone.
What employers don’t see
What you don’t see is the:
- The “any news about the job?” texts and questions they are constantly getting from family and friends
- The life plans they have on hold until they get a Yes or No from you
- Their self-confidence dissipating as they convince themselves they did a terrible interview and who would want to hire them anyway
We speak to 1000s of candidates each year – we know what they are thinking.
And as for Ghosting? We would never do that.
Are you sure?
According to research published in January 2026 by Greenhouse – 2025 Workforce and Hiring Report, 66% of candidates have been ghosted post interview in Ireland (56% in UK and 63% in US).
The simplest way to stand out
You can set your company apart by giving a specific realistic timeline at each stage and sticking to it – even if the update is ‘we haven’t made a decision yet’.
Great candidate experience isn’t complicated.
It’s just keeping your word.
